Dr. Bouman developed the algorithm which helped interpret the data from the Event Horizon telescopes. She gave this Tedx Talk three years ago back when she was still a PhD student.

I saw this on my news feed this morning and was pretty psyched. First, it was cool to see that someone relatively young and inexperienced had made such a big contribution to this massive project. Second, she’s obviously female in a still-male-dominated field, which is newsworthy.

But on the second point, MIT was very heavyhanded in some of their comments/tweets. It came across as “Hey guys, did we mention she’s a GIRL? Like a female person!” and was pretty condescending. There’s a fine line there.

I like how close the simulation was to what we actually saw.

My wife’s name is also Katie and I showed that picture to her last night. I gave her a gentle pat and said, “That Katie is smarter than this Katie.”

While we were both laughing and she was trying to feign indignation, I also clarified:

“That Katie is also smarter than everyone in this room.”

Such a cool picture and what a reaction.

To be fair, MIT only has like, three(?) women students.

Yeah, I think it shows how spot on the physics  are in regards to these things.

There’s lots of different types of intelligence. The key is finding  a way to best exploit your own. This Katie obviously found a great way to take advantage of her’s.

The radio dj this morning had a crazy take, the image processed light particles that went around the black hole at the same time a T-Rex was mun ching his way through lunch.

Think about that. 55 million light years. Crazy.

It’s also crazy to think that the particles and waves that create these images are bombarding earth, we just don’t have a way to process them into images. Imagine if our eyes could actually absorb and our brains could actually process all that info. The night sky would look even more insane.

Yeah, I’m so used to seeing old physicists talk about something like this, so she seemed really young to me. I was however, reminded of Margaret Hamilton, whose code helped put men on the moon at a pretty early age.

Thing is, I remember being one of their group just...yesterday.

With yesterday meaning 25 years ago.
